How Does An Ultrasound Work?
An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of your uterus and the pregnancy. Your first ultrasound, done in the first trimester, confirms three important things:
- Gestational age — how far along you are
- Location — whether the pregnancy is inside your uterus
- Viability — whether the pregnancy is able to progress
Do I Need an Ultrasound?
Yes. A pregnancy test can tell you that you’re pregnant — but only an ultrasound can tell you the rest.
Most importantly, an ultrasound can detect an ectopic pregnancy, where the embryo implants outside the uterus. An ectopic pregnancy cannot result in a live birth and can be life-threatening, so identifying it early is essential for your health.
